Helen Sholtis Dombrosky, 103, of Fellsburg/Rostraver Township, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 24, 2017. Born in Donora on December 13, 1913, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Huhra) Sholtis.
A lifelong resident of Fellsburg, her family moved to the township in 1919. She graduated from Donora High School in 1932, walking from Fellsburg with her dear friends Mary Streets Sickles and Madge Ellis to attend classes. After graduation, she was an assistant to Squire Andrew Erdely and her work required travelling to Harrisburg. Later she worked for Buck's Garage in Webster, walking to work every day until purchasing her first car in 1937. During World War II, she worked at Christy Park Mill in the Munitions Department producing bullets for the war. Later she worked at the Irvin Works, where she worked in the Accounting Department. In 1949, along with her husband, Alex, they leased the business operations of the Irondale Hotel in Donora from Wilson and Arthur Reed. In 1957 they sold the business to John Moses. Henrietta Bailey Kelly later sold the building, known as the Irondale Hotel, to PNC Bank. Helen continued her career in the Accounting Department of Gimbel's Department Store and later retired from the fabric department of the W. T. Grant Company. Helen loved to travel and travelled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, always taking along nieces and nephews. She travelled to Slovakia, the birthplace of her Father, numerous times to visit relatives and continued contact with them up until the time of her death. She was an avid gardener and loved culturing her flowers. An excellent cook and baker, she would deliver nut rolls and Kolache to all her relatives and neighbors. Helen was a member of the Church of St. Anne in Rostraver Twp.
She is survived by her sisters, Florence Shimchick of Greensburg and Patricia Behanna of Fellsburg; grandniece and loving caregiver, Rebecca Caldwell, husband James and family, with whom she made her home; numerous nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Dombrosky on January 19, 2004; sisters, Anna Toman and Mary Balko; brothers, George Sholtis and Bernard Sholtis; nephews, Timothy Rossell and Dennis Sholtis.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the James C. Stump Funeral Home Inc., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934) www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com where a Blessing Service will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Anne with Rev. Vincent J. Gigliotti as celebrant. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
