Thomas “Tom/Smitty” J. Smith, 65, of Rostraver Township, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Charleroi on February 23, 1952, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Adeline (Teska) Smith.
Tom was a Utility Inspector with Columbia Gas Company and retired with 38 years of service.
Tom was a life-long member of Rehoboth Presbyterian Church where he was a laborer of the Lord. He served as an Elder and was on the Building and Maintenance Committee. He also labored to understand the Lord's messages in the Bible. He enjoyed attending weekly Sunday Bible Study class and was known to provide a different "spin" on things, which at times proved to be quite humorous. He helped at all dinners and events throughout the years, working alongside his parents, siblings, wife, children, and friends at Rehoboth, taking great pride in striving for the greater good of his church.
Tom had a distinct love affair with the Chevy Camaro from his teenage years until his passing. He was a top-notch Pittsburgh Steelers fan and his love for the team never wavered. He loved maintaining his yard and vegetable garden.
Tom was appreciative for everything he had in life, but was most thankful for being blessed by God to have experienced the joy of becoming a father. Tom was the light of his family; and in his family's darkness brought on by the rare unforgiving illness, Multiple System Atrophy, his light still revealed brightness! He was able to guide his family throughout his ordeal, exhibiting a positive influence by giving instructions and advice, and keeping his faith in the Lord unwavering. His life-end journey was not one that he planned or dreamed of, but he accepted nobly what was given him. His great faith in the Lord and what his everlasting future held for him had allowed Tom to live with dignity until his last day. Tom had made the most of every single day, knowing that he was in the very best place to be, that is, in the hands of God. The countless and dedicated telephone calls, visits, prayers, cards, and gifts of food, flowers, etc. from others were a true comfort to he and his family during their time of need.
Tom's family wishes to extend a special thank you to OSPTA Hospice of Belle Vernon for their committed and loving care, and for their exceptional guidance throughout his extensive illness. They especially want to thank Linda, Ashley and Rachel, with love, for making the journey home less difficult.
Tom is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Komlos) Smith; son, Dalton T. Smith and his girlfriend Lizzie of Rostraver; daughter, KoreyAnne Smith of Rostraver; brother, Dwight (Susan) Smith; sisters, Patty (Dennis) Smith of Smithton and Darla (Richard) Snyder of State College; brother-in-law, Michael (Nancy) Komlos and sister-in-law, Joann (Steve) Verin, all of Belle Vernon.
